Things You Should Know About Acute Dialysis Nursing

  1. Like any other job, this position is not for everyone. I’m not trying to scare you but compared to other nursing jobs, work hours are unpredictable. You may be scheduled for 12 hours but may end up staying for more than that because of patient delays. Delays include transfer from ED to MS/Tele/ICU room or a stat procedure.
  2. You will work independently depending on patient census and staffing. There may be days wherein you may be the only dialysis nurse in the whole hospital. You will be the charge nurse, plumber, dialysis tech, and sitter of the patient.
  3. Your sleeping schedule will be messed up especially if you are assigned on call. In my work, on call is from 7pm to 7am.
  4. Be prepared to push machines. If you are to do treatment at bedside, get ready to push your dialysis machine and portable reverse osmosis machine. At times, you might even take a supply cart with you.
